The purpose of a letter of application (求职) is to help you to "sell" yourself. It should state 16 the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have 17 . It should be simple, human, personal and brief without 18 out any necessary facts.
In writing a letter of application, keep in 19 that things a possible employer is most 20 to want to know about are your qualification, your achievements and your aims. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part. 21 the first few sentences fail to 22 the reader's attention, the rest of the letter may not be 23 at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer, not 24 your own needs or desires. For example, instead of beginning with "I saw your 25 in today's newspaper". You might say "I have made a careful 26 of your advertising during the past six months" or "I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives 27 your product and why they like it".
Try to 28 generalities (笼统) . Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now 29 . College graduates looking for their first positions often ask "What can I 30 in a letter? Employers want experience---which, naturally, no 31 has. The answer is that everything you have ever done is 32 .
It is important to write a good strong closing remark for your letter. 33 a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. An excellent 34 is to enclose (内附) a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it 35 for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

When you turn on the radio, you hear an advertisement. When you watch television, you hear and see an advertisement. If you turn the pages of a newspaper or magazine, again you find a advertisement. If you walk down the street, you see one advertisement board after another. All day, every day, people who want to sell something compete to catch your attention. As a result, advertisements are almost everywhere.
In the West, advertisements are the fuel that makes mass media(媒体)work. Many TV stations, newspapers, magazines, radio stations are privately(私人)owned. The government does not give them money. So where does the money come from? From advertisements. Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses.
Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is? Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For some time it was felt that advertising was a means of “keeping your name before the public.” And some people thought that advertising was “truth well told.” Now more and more people tend to define(定义) it in this way: Advertising is the paid, nonpersonal, and usually persuasive presentation of goods, services and ideas by identified sponsors through various media.
First, advertising is usually paid for. Various sponsors(赞助商) pay for the ads we see, read, and hear over the various media. Second, advertising is nonpersonal. It is not face-to-face communication. Although you may feel that a message in a certain advertisement is aimed directly at you, in reality, it is directed at large groups of people. Third, advertising is usually persuasive. Directly or indirectly it urges people to do something. All advertisements try to convince(说服) people that the product, idea, or service advertised can benefit them. Fourth, the sponsor of the advertisement must be identified. From the advertisement, we can see if the sponsor is a corporation, or a committee, or an individual. Fifth, advertising reaches us through traditional and non-traditional mass media. Included in the traditional media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and films. Non-traditional media include the mail, matchbox covers, and billboards.
36. The existence of the privately owned mass media depends financially on the support of ____ .

Think about it
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do before a fire breaks out can save a life. For example, people should know the safety measures to take before opening a hall door during a fire. Also, make sure everyone knows how to unlock doors that may be in the escape path. At times, a key is needed to unlock a door from the inside. So, keep the key in the lock. Or, you can put the key on a key ring and put it where it can be found easily.
If you live in a flat, know the ways you can use to get out. Show everyone in the family these paths. Remind everyone of the importance of using stairways or fire escapes, not lifts.
From most homes and lower floors of a block of flats, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by a window with the least chance of serious injury.
In a home fire, windows are often the only means of escape. The second floor window sill is usually not more than 13 feet from the ground. An average person, hanging by the finger tips, will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building. Roll away from the building when you land.
Windows are also useful when you’re waiting for help. Often you’ll be able to stay in the room for several minutes if you keep the door closed and the window open. Keep your head low in the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof, a person can either drop to the ground or await rescue. Dropping onto sidewalk or pavement might end in injury. Bushes, soft earth, and grass can help to break a fall. A rope ladder should be considered when the drop is too great.
In a town where the fire department acts quickly, it may be best to wait for rescue. Close the doors and wait by an open window for help. Shout for help. Be sure to close the door before opening a window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room.
40. We can learn from the passage that windows are __________.

SHE dresses in saggy (宽松的) pants and is crazy about the pop star, Rain. Bin Xue is in love with South Korean culture. The 19-year-old from Sichuan Province feels a strong connection with the neighboring country.
"The two nations have a long history of friendship and there are many similarities between them," she said. "But Koreans are iron-willed, and we could learn this quality from them."
Bin is not the only Chinese deeply affected by Korean culture. A recent survey shows that most Chinese teenagers think highly of their eastern neighbor.
However, Koreans do not view the Chinese in the same good light. In a recent survey, only 5.5 per cent of Korean teens thought the Chinese people friendly.
The survey among high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the United States, was conducted in 156 high schools. More than 7,000 teenagers were questioned on success, family, their self-identity (自我意识), as well as their opinions about the world at large.
Results showed that most Korean teens gave a low score to the Chinese for patriotism (爱国心), responsibility and honesty. In their eyes, Chinese people are not hard-working and don't obey the rules.
"The result is surprising, but it does reflect a real information gap between teenagers in the two countries," said Lei Li, a psychology professor from the Capital Normal University.
Experts say that Chinese students' positive feelings about South Korea were a result of the booming (繁荣) popularity of Korean pop music. Korean movies and TV series have flooded China. And 73 per cent of the Chinese respondents said they watched Korean TV serials and cartoons.
On the other hand, Lei added, Korean teenagers don't have much access to China. The survey found that only 6.7 per cent of Korean students have ever read Chinese books or news magazines or watch Chinese TV programmes.1
Professor Lei thinks that Chinese teens should give themselves a better basis for appreciating the cultures of their neighbors. It's not enough to simply enjoy their music, TV and fashion sense. "The survey shows that Chinese teens should make friends with their foreign peers . They shouldn't judge other countries by their media alone," said Lei.
Luo Xi'er, 17, from Hunan Province, hopes Chinese people can improve their image. "In my opinion, it is the bad behavior of Chinese tourists which has destroyed our image abroad," she said.
The girl has read several online articles in which Koreans put Chinese tourists' bad manners under the spotlight. "I would like to go to South Korea some day and show them that most Chinese are good-mannered."
44. Most Chinese teenagers think highly of South Korea because _____.
A. they are crazy about pop stars in South Korea
B. Korean people have certain qualities they respect
C. there are many similarities between China and South Korea
D. all of the above
45. Korean teens probably have low opinions of Chinese because ______.
A. they are friendly and iron-willed B. they don't know much about China
C. they hate Chinese because of historical conflicts
D. they only watch Korean TV serials and cartoons
46. According to professor Lei, ______.
A. Chinese teens should not enjoy the pop music of South Korea
B. Chinese teens should help Korean peers learn more about China
C. we should prevent Korean movies and TV series from flooding in China
D. we should have a better understanding of Korean peers
47. We can infer from the survey _________.
A. Chinese teenagers think highly of South Koreans
B. most Korean teens gave a low score to the Chinese
C. it is necessary to strengthen cultural communications
D. bad behavior of Chinese tourists destroyed our image abroad

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a ‘territory’ is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language all their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
48. Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually________.
A. an expression of happiness B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting
49. What is a bird’s ‘territory’?
A. A place where families of other species are not accepted.
B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
C. An area for which birds fight against each other.
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own.
50. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because they want to invite more friends.
B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
C. Because they want to find outsiders around.
D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.
51. How does the writer explain bird’s singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings. B. By reporting experiment results.
C. By describing birds’ daily life. D. By telling a bird’s story.

Beverley had been feeling dull, bored and a bit out of it. He mentioned his mood (state of mind) when going to Andrew for a sports massage. He wondered whether he should take up Tai Chi. But Andrew didn’t think so.
“Tai Chi is great for people who want to feel grounded, but that isn’t your problem,” he said. “What you need is something more exciting, like dancing.”
In future, therapists (理疗专家) may well suggest that you fight your sadness with a course in kickboxing, and family doctors might suggest that you take a rest in the mountains instead.
We’ve long been aware that exercise has benefits beyond the physical ones; that activity can relax you, and help psychological well-being by reducing stress, anxiety and sadness.
Now some trainers and sports psychologists are going further and examining how to identify the correct exercise for a client’s (当事人) specific state of mind and personality.
Professor Stuart Biddle, an exercise and sports psychologist based at Loughborough University, England, has researched the effects of exercise on moods.
One of his findings was that, if your problem is low self-esteem, weight training should be your bag. “Working with weights builds strength,” he says, “and creates a stronger body image.”
Anger management, meanwhile, demands bursts of explosive (爆发性的) activity, from sports such as boxing or tennis.
This is because anger makes the body release(释放)adrenaline (肾上腺素), which causes heart rate and blood pressure to rise and muscles to become tighter —— the physiological changes required if you are to defend yourself.
Research shows that the “punch-bag (用拳头击打沙袋)” method of releasing disappointment and anger through hitting a boxing opponent (对手) or tennis ball, can help with fighting issues.
They have also found that teamwork is good for self-esteem and that those who are brought together to work in a social setting become more lively.
Which type of exercise will best help is, of course, down to the individual. Clearly, before you can find the best physical activity for yourself, you have to know your needs.
Ask yourself a few questions such as: What do I need in my life? Which issues are difficult for me? Am I sad or troubled? Only then can you decide whether you need taking up, or taking down.
52. Why did Andrew think Beverley shouldn’t take up Tai Chi?
A. Because Beverley was too weak. B. Because Beverley was too foolish.
C. Because Beverley’s mind was out of control. D. Because Beverley lacked activity.
53. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Psychologists haven’t realized the relationship between exercise and health.
B. People have already realized the relationship between exercise and spirits.
C. Boxing and tennis are the best ways to increase one’s self-esteem.
D. Trainers and psychologists don’t agree with each other on exercise.
54. Professor Stuart Biddle thinks that ____ .
A. anger should be examined by doctors B. anger should be taken away by medicine
C. anger should be given off by activities D. anger should be held back by oneself
55. The main idea of this passage may be ____ .
A. sports build up your body B. sports are helpful to your mind

The ups and downs of life may seem to have no predictable plan. But scientists know there are very definite patterns that almost all people share. Even if you’ve passed some of your “prime”, you still have other prime years to experience in the future. Certain important primes seem to peak later in life. It is really good news to many of us who don’t have a good feeling about ourselves now. We needn’t be worried about it now. When are you smartest? From 18-25, according to IQ scores; but you’re wiser and more experienced with increasing age.
You’re sharpest in your 20’s; around 30, memory begins to decline. But your IQ for other tasks climbs. Your vocabulary at the age of 45, for example, is three times as great as when you graduated from college. At the age of 60, your brain possesses almost four times as much information as it did at the age of 21. It is really amazing, but it is true.
When are you happiest? You have the best physical sense of yourself from 15 to 24; the best professional sense from 40 to 49.
Before age 24, we believe that our happiest years are yet to come; over 30, we believe that they’re behind us.
When are you most creative? Generally between 30 and 39, but the peak varies with different professions.
Mozart wrote a symphony and four sonatas by age eight, and Mendelssohn composed his best known work A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at 17, but most of the great music was written by men between 33 and 39.
Though the peak in most fields comes early-most Nobel prizewinners did their top research in their late 20’s and 30’s — creative people continue to produce quality work throughout their lives. For the “well-conditional mind”, there is no upper limit.
So if you are not very successful at present, it really doesn’t matter. Just have a little patience and wait for your best time.

Millions of people die of hunger in Southern Africa every year, but when Zambia was offered thousands of tons of free maize by the US, the government politely said no.
“We don’t know whether the food is safe,” said Zambia’s Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Dipak Patel.
His worries are shared by countries around the world that are in two minds about America’s genetically modified (GM) crops. Just last week, EU member nations were discussing whether or not to import GM sweet corn from the US.
Ever since people started farming, they have tried to crossbreed (杂交) plants to make them stronger or better tasting. At one time, only related plants could be crossed with each other.
But when GM techniques were developed in the 1970s, scientists were able to put a single gene from a living creature into an unrelated creature.
This means they can make crops more productive and resistant to disease by adding genes from other species. They can also create food with special characteristics, such as “golden rice”, which is enriched with vitamin A. But many people believe GM foods are a health risk.
“If left to me, I would certainly not eat GM foods,” said Scottish scientist Arpad Pusztai. “We are putting new things into food which haven’t been eaten before. The effects on the immune system are not easy to predict.”
At the moment, the official argument is that GM foods “are not likely to present risks for human health”. But there are still many questions to be answered as the foods are produced in different ways.
Some experts believe the genetic material added to plants can transfer to humans and give damage to our bodies. Further harm could be caused by the genes from GM plants crossbreeding with naturally produced crops.

Across t, he world, 1.1 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. More than 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation (卫生设备). The combination proves deadly. Each year, diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world. Safe drinking water is a precondition for health and the fight against child death rate, inequality between men and women, and poverty. Consider these facts: The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 kilometers.
n Only 58 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are drinking safe water, and only 37 percent of children in South Asia have access to even a basic toilet.
n Each year in India alone, 73 million working days are lost to water-borne diseases. Here are three ways you can help:
1) Write Congress Current U.S. foreign aid for drinking water and sanitation budgets only one dollar per year per American citizen. Few members of Congress have ever received a letter from voters about clean drinking water abroad. 2) Sponsor a project with a faith-based organization Many U.S. religious groups already sponsor water and sanitation projects, working with partner organizations abroad. Simply put a single project by a U.S. organization can make safe water a reality for thousands of people. 3) Support nonprofit water organizations Numerous U.S.-based nonprofits work skillfully abroad in community-led projects related to drinking water and sanitation. Like the sample of non-profits noted as follows: some organizations are large, other small-scale, some operate worldwide, others are devoted to certain areas in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Support them generously. 44. The three facts presented in the passage are used to illustrate that ________. A. poverty can result in water-borne diseases B. people have no access to clean drinking water C. women’s rights are denied in some developing countries D. safe drinking water should be a primary concern 45. The intended readers of the passage are ________. A. Americans B. overseas sponsors C. Congressmen D. US-based water organizations 46. The main purpose of the passage is to call on people to _________. A. get rid of water-related diseases in developing countries B. donate money to people short of water through religious groups C. fight against the worldwide water shortage and sanitation problem D. take joint action in support of some nonprofit water organizations 47. What information will probably be provided following the last paragraph? A. A variety of companies and their worldwide operation. B. A list of nonprofit water organizations to make contact with. C. Some ways to get financial aids from U.S. Congress. D. A few water resources exploited by some world-famous organizations. D Equipped only with a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) and ready to spend long hours waiting in all weathers for a precious glance of a rare bullfinch(红腹灰雀). Britain’s birdwatchers had long been supposed to be lovers of a minority sport. But new figures show birdwatching is fast becoming a popular pastime, with almost three million of us absorbed in our fluttering feathered friends.
Devoted birdwatchers, those prepared to travel thousands of miles for a sighting of a rare Siberian bird, are fast being joined by a new breed of follower whose interest is satiated by watching a few finches (雀科鸣鸟) on a Sunday walk or putting up a bird-box in the back garden. “Almost three million UK birdwatchers is certainly possible if you include everyone with only a casual interest,” Stephen Moss said in his newly published book—A Bird in the Bush: a Social History of Birdwatching—which records the pursuit from the rich Victorian Englishman’s love of shooting rare birds to the less offensive observational tendencies of birdwatchers today. Television wildlife programs have helped to fuel the new trend. Last summer, BBC 2’s Britain Goes Wild was a surprise success. It pulled in three million viewers and led to bird-houses selling out across the UK as 45,000 people promised to put up a box. Birdwatchers’ networking system first came to the attention of the nation in 1989, when a birdwatcher caught sight of the first Vermivora chrysoptera — a golden-winged songbird from North America—to be seen in Britain. He put a message out on the network service Birdline, and next day 3,000 birdwatchers proved the full pull of a truly rare bird as they visited the Tesco car park in Kent, where it had settled. Today, birdwatchers can log on to www.birdline.co.uk or have news of the latest sightings texted to their phones. “Multimillion-pound spending on binoculars, bird food and boxes point to the increasing numbers of birdwatchers,” said David Cromack, the editor of Bird Watching magazine, “The number of people involved is so big that they have great potential to influence government decisions affecting the environment.” 48. The word “satiated” in Paragraph 2 can be best replaced by “_______”. A. affected B. shared C. satisfied D. narrowed 49. What happened after the message of seeing a Vermivora chrysoptera was put on the network? A. Birdwatchers helped the rare bird settle in Kent. B. Large numbers of birdwatchers went to view the bird. C. Many birdwatchers logged on to the website for details. D. Birdwatchers showed their determination to protect the rare bird. 50. Which of the following CANNOT be true according to the passage? A. Television wildlife programs started the popular pastime of birdwatching. B. The network service has contributed to the rapid development of birdwatching. C. Birdwatching in Britain was long considered a sport with a small group of followers. D. The current situation of birdwatching may promote the protection of the environment. 51. The passage mainly tells us about ______ in UK. A. the history of birdwatching B. a growing passion for birdwatching

Tests administered(实施)to most elementary and high-school students in the United States exert an unfavorable influence on science and math teaching, according to a new $1 million study performed for the National Science Foundation. And because schools with high minority enrollments(入学)generally place a greater reliance(相信)on scores from these tests, the study finds, there tends to be “a gap in instructional emphases between high and low minority classrooms that differs from our national concern for the quality of education.”
George F. Madaus and his colleagues at Boston College analyzed not only the six most widely used national standardized tests, but also the tests designed to accompany (go with) the four most commonly used science and math texts in fourth-grade, eighth-grade, and high-school classrooms. Though curriculum(teaching program)experts argue that schools should place greater emphasis on problem solving and reasoning, the new study shows that the tests focus on lower-level skills—primarily mechanical memorization of routine formulas(公式).
Researchers surveyed more than 2,200 math and science instructors, interviewing in depth some 300 teachers and administrators. Especially in schools with high minority enrollments, teachers reported feeling pressured to help students perform well on these tests. Some states judge schools and some schools determine teacher assignments(工作安排)based on students' test scores.
“With so much worry,” Madaus says, “teachers feel forced to focus their instruction on drilling what the tests will measure—at the expense of the more valuable,higher-level skills.”

A. emphasis of teaching is on problem solving and reasoning
B. curriculum is good for national standardized tests
C. the tests mainly center around the memorization of some formulas
D. routine formulas are not useful for students to memorize

One of the roles of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to choose the host city for the Olympic Games. The host city election takes place in a country which does not have a candidate city for the Olympics in question. Except for unusual circumstances, the election is held seven years before the Olympic Games take place. There have been two phases leading to the election of the host city since December 1999.
Phase 1: applicant cities
Any city that wishes to host the Olympic Games must be proposed to the IOC by its National Olympic Committee (NOC), with a letter from the city itself. During the first phase, which lasts around ten months, each applicant city must answer a questionnaire to provide general information about itself. Then the applications will be examined carefully. A number of things will be considered, such as government support, public opinion, general infrastructure(基础设施), safety, accommodations and transport. The IOC Executive Board(执行董事会)will determine which applicant cities will be accepted as candidate cities. Only candidate cities can continue with the procedure.
Phase 2: candidate cities
Candidate cities must provide a candidature(候选资格)file according to the instructions given by the IOC. After all the files are examined and the IOC Evaluation Commission(评估委员会)produces its report, the IOC Executive Board draws up a list of final candidate cities. The general assembly of the IOC then takes a vote on the host city.

I’ve written 14 movies. My characters smoke in many of them, and they look cool and glamorous doing it. Smoking was an integral(必需的) part of many of my screenplays because I was a heavy smoker. It was part of a bad-boy image I’d cultivated for a long time— smoking, drinking, partying, rock ’n’ roll.
Smoking, I once believed, was every person’s right. The second-hand smoke was non-existent problem invented by professional do-gooders. I put all these views into my plays.
Remembering all this, I find it hard to forgive myself. I have been an accomplice (帮凶) to the murders of untold numbers of human beings. I am admitting this only because I have made a deal with God. Spare me, I said, and I will try to stop others from committing the same crimes I did.
Eighteen months ago I was diagnosed with throat cancer, the result of a lifetime of smoking. I am alive but disabled. Much of my larynx (喉) is gone. I have some difficulty speaking; others have some difficulty understanding me.
I haven’t smoked or drunk for 18 months now, though I still take it day by day and pray for help. I believe in prayer and exercise. I have walked five miles a day for a year, without missing even one day. Quitting smoking and drinking has taught me the hardest lesson I’ve ever learned about my own weakness; it has also given me the greatest affection and empathy(同感) for those still addicted.
I don’t think smoking is every person’s right anymore. I think smoking should be as illegal as heroin. I’m no longer such a bad boy. I go to church on Sunday. I’m desperate to see my four boys grow up. I want to do everything I can to undo the damage I have done with my own big-screen words and images.
Screen writers know, too, that some movie stars are more likely to play a part if they can smoke —because they are so addicted to smoking that they have difficulty stopping even during the shooting of a scene.
My hands are bloody; so are Hollywood’s. My cancer has caused me to attempt to cleanse me. I don’t wish my fate upon anyone in Hollywood, but I beg that Hollywood should stop putting it upon millions of others.
36. The main idea of this passage probably is _________.
A. the writer is ashamed of the bad effects his screenplays have had on human beings
B. the writer’s smoking experience nearly killed himself
C. the bad effects that Hollywood screenplay have brought to children
D. the determination of the writer to overcome his illness
37. How do you think the writer has realized his mistake?
A. So many people have found the habit of smoking due to his plays.
B. His plays have brought great harm to teenagers.
C. He himself suffered greatly from smoking.
D. His screenplays have been doing more and more harm to human beings.
38. What is the writer determined to do in future?
A. He has made up his mind to give up smoking forever.
B. He will try his best to prevent others from writing screen plays encouraging smoking.
C. He will try his best to bring up his four children.
D. He has decided to write his screenplays without smoking scenes.
39. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.
A. the writer will soon be recovered from his illness thanks to his exercise
B. the writer will soon die because of his deadly disease
C. smoking will be got rid of in all Hollywood films
D. smoking in Hollywood films is still doing great harm to human beings

The home service industry in Beijing is expected to become more attractive both as a job and as an industry.
Sources at the Beijing People’s Political Consultative Conference said resistance to home service work is melting away from minds of the city’s laid-off workers. The Conference suggested the establishment of municipal (市政的) centers which supervise (监督) property management, household mending and installation, and house keeping services. Modern city life is creating a need for industrialization home services. This will create job opportunities for laid-off workers, said vice director of the Social Judicial Committee of the Conference.
Beijing residents have long desired a home service industry. The demand is expected to drive new economic growth. There are few high quality home help services in Beijing and customers are always complaining.
In the past, few laid-off workers in Beijing desired to work as home helpers, jobs largely taken by young women from the countryside. At the same time, some city residents have not felt safe trusting rural girls with modern household machines or with their small children. Many people would pay more for reliable house keepers who are more familiar with city life, but they have had no way of getting one, even though the city is home to thousands of laid-off workers.
By the end of June this year, there were 30,600 jobless workers in the city. Most of them are women in their 40’s, who are not blessed with particular skills and who have had their work ethics (准则) shaped by the planned economy. Many of them were at a loss when they first realized they had lost their jobs and a way of life they had got used to for decades. They never imagined being laid off by state owned enterprises; they never considered other kinds of employment. For them, the private sector (部门) meant taking risks; house-keeping implied lower social status. Gao Yunfang, 44, is a pioneer who is breaking the ice. She sells the Beijing Morning Post in the morning, and works at two households in the afternoon. She earns 1,000 yuan per month. So she no longer worries about her daughter’s tuition at a university in Shanghai.

42. Why didn’t the laid-off workers like to do home services in the past?
A. Low salary. B. Lower social status.
C. Dirty working condition. D. Too much extra work.
43. Why were many laid-off workers at a loss?
A. Because they didn’t get used to the new way of life.
B. Because they are too old to find a new job.
C. Because they dislike being laid off.
D. Because they think they lost their social status.

Just call Apolo Anton Ohno the most decorated sportsman in the history of the Winter Olympics. The speed skater glided into the history books after the 2010 Olympics, winning a record-breaking eighth Olympic medal after completing the men’s 5,000-meter relay.
Apolo Anton Ohno, born on May 22, 1982, is an American short track speed skating competitor and an eight-time medalist (two golds, two silvers, four bronzes) in the Winter Olympics. He is one of the only four Americans who have won three medals in a single Winter Olympic Games. He started skating at age 12, and in two years became the best short track skater in the United States. In December1999, he became the youngest skater to win a World Cup event title.
“It feels amazing, especially in a sport as volatile as short track speed skating,” he remarked after his historic win. “This is my third Olympic Games and there is no other athlete here who has gone to three Olympic Games and won a medal every time. I wanted to leave my heart and soul on the ice and I did. I don’t look back at past medals, but I look back at the struggles. I live my life with the philosophy that anything’s possible but I had no idea I’d have this much success.”
Ohno’s third Olympics might have been his last. He is considering retirement, although US national coach Jimmy Jang is hoping to convince his longtime friend to compete four years from now in Sochi, a Russian city where the next Winter Olympics is going to be held.
“I never say ‘never’,” Ohno said. “I need a break from this sport that’s been very good to me.”
After the relay, Ohno skated over to congratulate the Canadians and shook hands with his South Korean competitors. One of them said: “We have some good memories and we also have some bad memories of Ohno. I will be sorry to see him leave the world of short track when he does.”

People want action on noise, a recent public meeting in Brisbane showed. Some want technical improvements such as quieter air conditioners or better sound barriers around major roads. Others want tougher laws to restrict noise from building sites or to require owners to take responsibility for barking dogs. But the highest priority (优先) was a noise complaints system that works.
Brisbane City Council receives more complaints about noise than all other problems put together. So it conducted survey and found that about half its citizens are upset by noise in one form or another—traffic, mowers, pool pumps, air conditioners or loud parties. This inspired the Council to bring together more than 100 citizens one evening to talk through solutions to the problem.
The meeting found the present noise complaints system bizarre. Depending on the problem, responsibility for noise can lie with the Council, the Environment Protection Authority, one of three government departments or even the police. So complaints often feel they are getting the run-round. When the people at the meeting were asked to vote for changes, the strongest response was for a 24-hour, noise hotline to be the first port of call for all complaints.
The meeting also favored regulatory measures, such as tougher minimum standards for noise in appliances like air conditioners. This even makes economic sense, as noise is a waste of energy—and money. Other measures the meeting supported were wider buffer zones around noisy activities and controls to keep heavy traffic away from residential areas(居民区).

Do American children still learn handwriting in school? In this age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out.
Steve Graham, a literacy professor at Vanderbilt University, says he has been hearing about the death of handwriting for the past fifteen years. However, a recent survey shows that it is still being taught by about 90% of teachers in grades one to three. 90% of teachers also say they are required to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. Professor Graham says that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. “And then when you look at how it’s taught, you have some teachers who are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for ten, fifteen minutes a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for 60 to 70 minutes a day -- which really for handwriting is pretty much death.”
Many adults remember learning by copying letters over and over again. Today’s thinking is that short periods of practice are better. Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught by itself but be used as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.
Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility (清楚), which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency -- writing without having to think about it. The professor says fluency continues to develop up until high school.
But not everyone masters these skills. Teachers commonly report about one-fourth of their kids have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important anymore because of computers and voice recognition programs. But Professor Graham says word processing is rarely done in elementary school, especially in the early years. Even with high school teachers, we find that less than 50% of assignments are done via word processing or with word processing. And, in fact, if we added in taking notes and doing tests in class, most of the writing done in school is done by hand.
American children traditionally first learn to print, then to write in cursive (草体的), which connects the letters. But actually more than 75% of students choose to print their essay on the test rather than write in cursive.

Dear editor,
Now video games are very popular among the school students. Some students are so interested in the game that they spend all day playing. Sometimes they forget to do their homework and some even play truant. Each time they have to pay much money. In order to play video games they often ask their parents for more money, some often borrow money from other students, some even steal money from their classmates, which have brought out very bad effects.
Too much video game playing needs time, money and energy. The owners benefit a lot but it’s not good for the students’ study and health.
I do hope measures will be taken by the government to prevent students from playing video games.
Yours ever,
Lin Tao

I prefer my English classes to be taught in English only. As we all know, a good learning environment is vital if we want to study Englishe well. Classes taught in English provide students with such an environment. When English is the only language used in the classroom, students will have more opportunities to practise listening and speaking. Therefore, they will be able to learn more quickly.
However, there are also some problems with this teaching method. As we haven’t mastered enough English words, sometimes we may find it difficult to follow the teacher. Slow learner may even lose interest in English.
Practice makes perfect. To learn English well requires a lot of practice. Therefore, I like my English classes to be taught completely in English.
⑵
I prefer my English classes to be taught in both English and Chinese. In my opinion, learning English is a step-by-step process. As middle school students, we only have a small vocabulary. If the teacher can use some Chinese in an English class, we will understand the lesson better.
Of course, an English class taught in two languages has its shortcomings. Such a class cannot create a good atmosphere for English learning. Some students will speak Chinese all the time and cannot learn English well.
If you want to learn a lesson well, you have to understand it first. To help students understand the lesson better, the teacher should use Chinese from time to time. Therefore, I like my teacher to use both English and Chinese in teaching.

My dear classmates, may I have your attention, please? I have a few things to tell you.
As you know, we are going to have classes in the language lab from now on. When you have classes there, you are supposed to be there five minutes before the class begins in order to get the machines ready. Once you are in the language lab, please take your seat according to your number and don’t change seats without permission. Please follow the teacher’s instructions and don’t touch the machines without permission.
Please try not to make any noise during class, or you will disturb others. Please try to speak English in class. When class is over, turn off your machines and make sure everything is fine before you leave the language lab one by one.
That’s all. Thank you!
