第二节 完形填空 (每小题1分,满分20分)
I was talking with a friend a few days ago, who is pregnant with her first child. We were talking about 21 — how our parents raised us, what we would do 22 with our children, what we would keep the same. She was a little anxious about being a parent, about being 23 for a child and his or her life.
I remember saying to her, that regardless of how perfectly she may try to 24 her child, the child will be screwed up(搞糟) anyway simply by his or her own interpretation and 25 of everything that happens in his or her life.
I told her a story that I heard at one of Tony Robbins' events. A story about two Vietnam war veterans who had 26 their friends and fellow soldiers in the Vietnam war. Both fought in the same 27 , both witnessed the loss of their fellow countrymen, both experienced the frightening act of taking someone else's 28 . And yet, after the war was over, both led very different lives. 30 years 29 the war ended, one was depressed, lonely and suicidal; the other happy and healthy, 30 by a loving family and close friends. So what is the difference?
31 on his experience of the war in Vietnam, one man thought, "What is the 32 of being close to someone? I'll lose them 33 ." So he lived his life in bitterness and resentment, 34 of being close to anyone to avoid having to feel the pain of losing them.
The other man, 35 , thought, “Life is precious. I have to live it to the 36 and cherish every moment of it.” So he lived his life in gratitude, 37 every moment he has with his loved ones. What a big difference that made!
Nothing has meaning except the 38 you give it. You are responsible for giving meaning to everything that has happened in your life. So, the question is, would you rather be like the first war veteran who lived his life with 39 , anger and fear? Or would you rather be like the second, who saw the lessons the war had 40 him and created a more empowering meaning for it?
21. A. cooking B. nursing C. parenting D. working

23. A. respectable B. responsible C. acceptable D. accessible
24. A. prepare B. keep C. support D. raise

Driving a car is not just handling controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you to predict what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected , When alcohol is consumed, it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant (抑制药),damaging eyesight, judgment and co-ordination (协调),slowing down reaction time and greatly increasing the risk of accidents. Even below the drink driving limt , driving will be affected.
Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and start action on the brain. The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is :

● 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath ;or
● 67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine(尿液)
Drivers who cause traffic accidents, or who commit a moving traffic offence or are being suspected of drink driving will be tested.
Any drive found drinking beyond the limit will be charged. The driver declared guilty may be fined a maximum of HK﹩25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for 10 driving-offence points; or temporarily banned from driving.

For five days,Edmonton's Downtown Park is transformed into one huge stage where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves .Since is beginning in 1980,the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating(纪念)the ture feeling of what folk music is all about and that's the traditional togetherness(友爱)that is felt when people gather to share stories and feelings through song.
This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival. "People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation ," Riedel said. Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer(征服) Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland. In the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The republic of Ireland , In the south , Is an independent country.
In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work , forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.
For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Commodities(日用品) are basic materials that are used and traded worldwide. The price of commodities helps determine how much a business can charge for a product and the profit it can make. Commodity prices have reached a two-year high since falling sharply during the world financial crisis.
Hard commodities are materials like iron ore, oil and gold. Agricultural products are soft commodities. These include wheat, cotton and rice.
Economic measures show the world economy is recovering. China and India, for example, have reported strong growth in manufacturing(制造业). Developed nations have had slower growth. John James, a business professor at Pace University, says demand in developing economics can push up prices for commodities like oil and iron are used for making steel. But, he says, changing currency values can also influence prices.
Gold prices have reached record levels in recent months. That means gold dealers must pay more for the commodity now than they did only a year ago. That affects current prices.
Not surprisingly, manufacturers want some control over the prices they pay for commodities. Futures(期货) contracts are agreements between a buyer and a seller to exchange something at a set price at some time in the future. These contracts let buyers lock in a price for basic materials. But some traders in futures markets only want to make a profit. They buy or sell contracts depending on the direction they believe prices will go. These speculators(投机者) get condemned when prices rise, or fall, too quickly. The United States, Germany and France are looking into ways to limit this kind of trading.
Some experts say exporting commodities is not a good path to long-term economic growth. The United Nations recently reported that the least developed countries must change their economics to provide good incomes for their citizens. A UN official says the least developed countries need to cut dependence on commodities and manufacture products for export. He says only this will let them gain from world trade.

第四节 任务型阅读 (每小题1分,满分10分)
A conflict at work is common. If you can avoid conflict, it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed, it will simply reappear later. Here are the necessary steps to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.
★Be aware of the fact that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it's not the end of the world. On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.
★ Deal with conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from something that wasn't said! Everyone's waiting for the other to admit he's wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It's essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before it gets to that point.
★ Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don't understand their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference. Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there's a good reason why that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort.
★ Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it's worth it to you to solve the conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with, but it's a great way to move forward.
